Shampoo Bars. Sometimes.

Ok, full disclosure. I’m still working on making the switch from liquid shampoo to shampoo bars. This is not an easy transition for me. My hair likes liquid shampoo! I’ve been using it for almost 40 years! But plastic…and chemicals…*sigh* SO…I’m using the bars half the time, and the old liquid stuff half the time. Baby steps.

I have yet to try a vinegar rinse, which helps balance pH, detangles hair, removes leftover residue, and adds shine - as well as being an effective treatment for dry scalp or dandruff. It’s especially helpful if you have hard water. You can find tons of info on this, but here’s the recipe I’ll be trying out this week:

1-2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar

8-12 oz water

1-2 drops of essential oil of your choice (go light - these are powerful)

Mix together and pour over hair after washing. Wait a minute and then rinse. Experiment with the dilution level. Oily hair might need more vinegar, dry hair may need less.

That being said, I love my first homemade shampoo bar. So many people have asked if/when I would add one to my line-up…here you go! It’s not so different from my regular soap (and you could definitely use any of my bars as a shampoo) but I made a few adjustments to tailor it for hair use. And I chose to use beer, since it’s great for skin and hair, and adds suds. It works well as a full body soap as well.

I can’t wait to hear what everyone thinks! I’ll definitely be looking to add other shampoo varieties in the future. Any requests?

P.S. Next up for Abbondanza Soap Co…natural deodorant. Coming soon!

UPDATE: The vinegar rinse is a success! My hair feels great. Shiny and easy to manage. No more liquid shampoo for me! The conversion is complete.
